Abstract

The aim of this article is to study the theme of duplicity in Albert Camus' 'The Fall', and its relation with Charles Baudelaire's prose poem 'Counterfeit Money'. The closeness between these two texts allows us to notice a different behavior of the characters facing the morality of their era. In Baudelaire's case, it prioritizes the Evil as an opposite mean to reach the romantic sublime; on the other hand in Camus' text, the ambivalences are incessantly repeated till they are exhausted, giving to the reader only ironic images of a course: the reflexes of a smile.
