The geography between materiality and immateriality

During the history of geographic thought, antagonisms proved to be powerful enough to stimulate the emergence of very different mainstreams of thought and methods of geographical analysis: on the one hand, objectivity versus subjectivity; on the other, materiality versus immateriality. This article presents how these antagonisms participate in the geographic analysis, reflecting on the limitations of their extreme manifestations, as a way to the objective of this theoretical reflection: the suggestion of an intermediate position in the midst of this theoretical effort, inspired by the thought of Augustin Berque about mediation of materiality and immateriality and the word geograms. As a methodological strategy, the article starts from the discussions that involved materialities and immaterialities in the period of reaction to the flourishing of neopositivism in the 1950s. The manifestations of objectivity and subjectivity in geographical research are also addressed, which support to think about the materiality and immateriality of the elements of the landscape and the concepts appropriated by geography. The metaphor landscape-as-an-text is used as a reflection strategy, which served as an instrument of reflection on the problems arising from the use of extreme forms of immateriality. Finally, it highlights the most practical effects of the disagreement between materiality and immateriality, using the categories race and culture as reflective tools.
