Ethnobotany, Indigenous people of Pernambuco, Traditional communitiesAbstract
In this ethnobotany study accomplished in the Pankararu indigenous territories, located in the State of Pernambuco, Brazil, through interviews was verified the use of 87 plant species and two lichen species, being most part of natural occurrence of the biome Caatinga and the others introduced for several purposes, such as medicine, food, handicrafts, firewood, utensils and buildings in general. The objective of this study was to accomplish a gathering of the knowledge that Pankararu possess about the vegetation of their territories. The knowledge of the plants and man's relationship with the nature neither are passed or learned in a systematic or formal way among these natives, there are few that holden theese knowledge. The great variety of registered plant species demonstrated that the use of the plants is comprehensive. The Cultural Significance Index of each plant was calculated. The species of most cultural significance are native, usually of medicinal use for different health treatments, as Neoglaziovia variegata, Caesalpinia pyramidalis, Spondias tuberosa, Baccharis sylvestris, Commiphora leptophloeos, Syagrus coronata, Aspidosperma pyrifolium, Hyptis pectinata, Lippia macrophylla, Jatropha pohliana, Pithecellobium avaremotemo e Sideroxylon obtusifolium, showing the importance of Caatinga species in the cultural and ecological survival of the Pankararu.
