A study about intertextual relations between biblical texts and gospel songs

Intertextuality, The Bible, SingsAbstract
Intertextuality is a relevant theme in linguistic and textual studies due to its capacity of creating new senses from the different dialogues that take place between texts. This is not different with the songs classified as gospel. They show, almost unanimously, intertextuality with biblical texts for two main reasons: the religious character that determines gospel music, that makes it different from the secular music, and the audience charges about the contents of the songs. In this perspective, we discuss the way stricto sensu intertextuality emerge between songs and the Bible, the way it reflects into the definition of the musical genre called gospel. Nobre (2014) proposal as the model of analysis, because it articulates intertextual processes as classified by the most important scholars. It is believed that, as music is an important instrument in religious practices, it is a profitable motif to intertextuality observation.
