Abstract

In this article I investigate the presence of the Augustinian notions of free will and freedom in two works by Luther, in relation to the persistency of his interest in Theologia Germanica, an anonymous treatise on mysticism. To this end (1) I analyze the Quaestio de viribus et voluntate hominis sine gratia disputata, dated 1516, (2) I show that the Quaestio  presupposes the Augustinian distinction between free will and freedom; (3) I present  the mystical notion of freedom such as it appears in Theologia Germanica and (4) I establish the presence of the said notion in De libertate christiana (1520).
