A multidimensional analysis of the Diamantina-Minas Gerais Carnival

Abstract

This study is characterized as a qualitative–quantitative, descriptive and exploratory investigation, aimed at analyzing the structural transformations of the Carnival of Diamantina, Minas Gerais, and their implications for sustainability. Data collection was carried out in loco during the five days of the 2025 festivities, through a structured questionnaire administered to 370 residents, 344 visitors, and 76 local business owners. The closed-ended questions sought to assess participants’ perceptions of the cultural, social, environmental, and economic impacts of the event, while the single open-ended question allowed for the free expression of comments. The results indicate that, although the Carnival of Diamantina incorporates sustainable practices, challenges remain, particularly with regard to promoting equity and ensuring the effective integration of cultural and social practices.

Hugo Rodrigues de Araujo, Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri

Graduado em Turismo pela Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto (2007), com especialização em Ecoturismo pela Universidade Federal de Lavras (2009), mestrado em Sustentabilidade pela UFOP (2014) e doutorado em Turismo pela Universidade de Lisboa (2019). Atualmente, é professor do curso de Turismo da Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri, Campus JK, onde atua na formação de profissionais comprometidos com a inovação e o desenvolvimento responsável do setor. Ao longo de sua trajetória, tem se dedicado ao estudo do planejamento, gestão e marketing de destinos turísticos, com ênfase no desenvolvimento sustentável e na incorporação estratégica das Tecnologias da Informação e Comunicação (TICs). Seu trabalho busca aproximar teoria e prática, contribuindo para a construção de destinos mais inteligentes, competitivos e sensíveis às realidades locais. Participa de projetos de pesquisa e extensão voltados à valorização do patrimônio cultural, ao fortalecimento da governança turística e à promoção de modelos inovadores de gestão territorial. Acredita no turismo como força transformadora capaz de gerar oportunidades, preservar identidades e impulsionar novas formas de vivenciar os territórios.
