Abstract

This study analyzes the profile of tourists and the level of visitor satisfaction during the 2026 Carnival in São Luís, Maranhão, Brazil. The research was conducted by the Maranhão Tourism Observatory (OBSTUR-MA) to identify the sociodemographic characteristics of tourist demand, assess visitors' perceptions of the event and tourism services, and verify their intention to revisit the destination. The study adopted a descriptive, exploratory, and quantitative approach through the application of semi-structured questionnaires at the main entry points to the city. The results revealed a predominance of domestic tourists, especially from the states of Pará and São Paulo, in addition to a significant regional flow. Most respondents were women aged between 19 and 40 years, traveled by air, and stayed in hotels. Carnival was identified as the main travel motivation, with an average length of stay of 5.44 days and an average expenditure of R$374.34. Visitor satisfaction was predominantly positive regarding national and local attractions, event programming, accommodation facilities, and natural, historical, and cultural attractions. More than 80% of respondents expressed their intention to return to Maranhão, indicating a high level of satisfaction with the tourism experience. The findings demonstrate that the São Luís Carnival contributes significantly to regional tourism development, strengthens the local economy, and reinforces the city's position as one of Brazil's leading Carnival destinations.
