This study analyzes the role of tourism in Espírito Santo’s ocean economy, considering its territorial distribution
and participation in the formal business structure of coastal municipalities. The research aims to understand the
relative importance, composition, and spatial distribution of tourism-related activities within the state’s ocean economy, focusing on the 14 coastal municipalities of Espírito Santo, Brazil. This is a descriptive and exploratory
study based on secondary data from formally classified companies within the ocean economy, including
information on the number of companies, economic activities, firm age, social capital, formal employment, and
labor remuneration. The results indicate that tourism represents the main sector of Espírito Santo’s ocean economy
in terms of the number of companies, accounting for the largest share of formal establishments analyzed. However,
the sector presents strong territorial concentration, especially in the municipalities of Vitória, Vila Velha, Serra,
and Guarapari, along with a predominance of food and beverage-related activities. Regarding formal employment,
the concentration of jobs and wage mass in a limited number of municipalities is also evident. It is concluded that
tourism represents a strategic dimension of Espírito Santo’s ocean economy, although characterized by territorial
inequalities that highlight the importance of integrated indicators and evidence-based analyses to support public
planning and sector management.
