The representation of Black womanhood in children’s literature is crucial for the development of young readers, especially regarding the construction of positive identities. Furthermore, it constitutes an act of resistance against racism. Its relevance is evident in several aspects, as in the deconstruction of racist stereotypes that have historically reinforced negative portrayals of Black individuals (as inferior, marginalized, or terrifying characters). Therefore it becomes necessary to conduct a detailed study on the representation of Black women in children’s literature. Therefore, this article aims to analyze the representation of Black femininity in the comic books written by Mauricio de Sousa, widely known for producing the famous stories of the Turma da Mônica since the 1960s, in addition to creating more than two hundred characters that have influenced several generations. His career combines art, business, and a strong connection with children’s culture in Brazil. To support this discussion, Almeida (2019) is used to address racial issues; Ramos (2009), to discuss comic books, Carvalho (2006), regarding comic books as a pedagogical resource, as well as bell hooks (2019) and Mbembe (2017), whose works contribute to the discussion of racial issues addressed in this study.
