Northeast Brazil: a glance at the semiarid region and the drought experience

Abstract

The Brazilian regions"™ classification is considered to be based to consider aspects such as their history, geo-environmental conditions and cultural particularities. The present study aims to demonstrate that not only climatic factors are responsible for the delay in the development of the Northeastern semi-arid, but a whole set of cultural factors that are linked to the history, society and economy of this territory. To achieve this, we use a bibliographic approach in order to deepening the actions knowledge and interpretation of the various subjects that contribute to delineate the Brazilian Northeast"™s space and the Northeastern semi-arid, as well as their occupation, permanence and coexistence. Thus, it approached here a critical view of the reality of the Northeastern semiarid, where we dialogue with drought and its relationship with social issues, especially in view of the historical context of the region, where we can highlight that the management of environmental conditions is the main actor of the reality that lives in the northeast of Brazil in the current days.
