Abstract

Fear and insecurity are becoming more and more present in the urban space of the cities of the national territory, regardless of the scale under analysis, ie, this fact occurs both in the metropolises and capitals, as well as in the medium and even small centers. urban areas of the country. This study aims to understand how the city of Mossoró spatially reconfigures itself from fear and insecurity as elements to influence the organization of public and private spaces in some areas of the city. From the review of the specific literature and the reading and analysis of the rates of violence and crime in the city, a field research was conducted with some local agents such as private security entrepreneurs and residents of residential and gated communities. We find that, in fact, there is an influence of violence and insecurity on the city's spatial organization, even though in delimited areas of the local urban space, as some of its social segments with higher purchasing power seek to protect themselves through the acquisition of security apparatus and even turning to the new ways of living in housing in gated communities.
