O MUNDO MAQUINADO

UMA ABORDAGEM ECOCRÍTICA DO POEMA “A MÁQUINA DO MUNDO”, DE CARLOS DRUMMOND DE ANDRADE

Abstract

The poem “A Máquina do Mundo”, by Carlos Drummond de Andrade, initially published in the book “Claro enigma” (1951), can be read differently with each new reading. This interpretation proposes an ecocritical look at the destructive power of iron ore exploration in the region of Minas Gerais, whose effects on the environment are described by the lyrical self, through an enigmatic language that invites the reader to interpretation. Human ambition left a dark trail over those lands, which is trodden by the nebulous lyrical self as it walks along a road of Minas. The three kingdoms (animal, plant and mineral) are compromised by the overwhelming process of the “machine of the World” (“Os Lusíadas” of Camões), but there is something that seems to save the lyrical self: the sounds that still come from the environment, and also the reticent flowers, which open and close inside him. Therefore, they are symbols of resistance. After a brief contextualization (O mundo presente), this essay presents a formal analysis (O mundo ferrado) that walks linearly with the poem's verses and, finally, concludes by performing a critical synthesis of the exhibition (O mundo continuado). It is important to emphasize the intertextual character of the analysis, not only with Drummond's own work, but with the literary canon, as well as the reverberations of the Minas Gerais writer's work in later authors. This ecocritical approach has as its main theoretical apparatus the study by José Miguel Wisnik, entitled Maquinação do mundo: Drummond e a mineração (2018).
