VOWEL EXEMPLARS BY ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHERS IN RIO GRANDE DO NORTE
Keywords:
Interphonology, Brazilian Portuguese, English as a Foreign LanguageAbstract
This study has as its main objective to compare acoustically Brazilian Portuguese (BP) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) front vowels by teachers of English in western Rio Grande do Norte, a Brazilian state. BP [i, e, É›] and EFL [i, ɪ, É›, æ] vowels have been analysed. The study begins by presenting a literature overview section involving Portuguese-English interphonology. Methodology procedures involved data reanalysis of a previous study (BARBOZA, 2008), whose data collection involved production of tonic front vowels between stop consonants, in two-syllable words with stress in the first syllable in BP words, and one-syllable words in EFL, inserted in carrier-sentences "X. Diga X alto" and "X. say X again". Quantitative acoustic analysis involved data collection of F1, F2 and duration values of aforementioned vowels. Results indicated significant spectral overlap of BP/EFL vowels [i], BP [e] and EFL [ɪ], as well as BP [É›] and EFL [É›, æ]. Significant differences have been noticed involving BP and EFL vowels as regards duration as well.
