Abstract

The article reviews the use of poems in elementary school, disapproving a utilitarian and pedagogical approach, commonly employed by some teaching manuals and/or teachers in Brazilian formal education, and highlights instead the importance of a reading of this textual genre from the perspective of its language and aesthetic organization. To this end, it introduces as methodological tool the concept of "Significance" elaborated by Michael Riffaterre and, by this means, analyses two poems by Vinicius de Moraes.
