A BIBLIOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF TAG QUESTIONS INTONATION IN BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE AND AMERICAN ENGLISH

Abstract

This article aims to present research on intonation contours of Tag questions (TQs) in Brazilian Portuguese (BP) and American English (AE). To carry out this study, we have the following research question: how are the intonational contours of TQs in BP and AE realized? We hypothesized that the intonation of BP TQs differs from AE and can influence the Brazilian learner of English as an Additional Language (EAL). In this way, a survey of the intonational variations of TQs of BP and AE was carried out, bringing a methodology of bibliographic research. This research was based on the works involving BP intonation of TQs by Duarte (1985) and Serra (2009) and, for AE, the works of Verdugo and Trillo (2005) and Knudsen (2011). The review indicates that the intonation contours of AE TQs can be either ascending or descending, while in BP there was a predominance of the ascending contour, without, however, a stablished pattern of intonation. According to the literature review, we believe that the realization of TQs by Brazilian EAL learners will pose difficulties due to the influence of BP.

Ítala Carvalho Lima Tôrres, Universidade do Estado do Rio Grande do Norte (UERN)

Mestranda no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciências da Linguagem (PPCL), pela Universidade do Estado do Rio grande do Norte (UERN). Foi bolsista da CAPES pelo PPCL. Graduada em Letras – Língua Inglesa e respectivas Literaturas pela UERN (2020). Atuou como aluna pesquisadora pelo Programa Institucional de Bolsas de Iniciação Cientifica (PIBIC, 2016-2019), participando atualmente como integrante do grupo de Pesquisa em Fonética e Fonologia (GP e FF) e do grupo de Estudos em Prosódia, Variação e Ensino (PROVALE). O presente trabalho foi realizado com apoio da Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior – Brasil (CAPES) – Código de Financiamento 001.

Doutor em Linguística (2013) pela Universidade Federal do Ceará (UFC), Mestre em Linguística aplicada (2008) pela Universidade Estadual do Ceará – UECE. É Professor e pesquisador do Departamento de Letras Estrangeira (DLE/FALA) da Universidade do Estado do Rio grande do Norte (UERN), atuando também como coordenador no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciências da Linguagem (PPCL/UERN). Tem publicado artigos na área de Fonética e Fonologia do português brasileiro e sua interfonologia com línguas adicionais.
