Love and Death in the Poem Annabel Lee, by Edgar Allan Poe

This work aims to identify, describe, and analyze the cognitive processes that enable us to understand the concepts of love and death in the poem Annabel Lee, written by the American author Edgar Allan Poe. The analysis adopts a qualitative and interpretive approach, guided by the principles of Cognitive Linguistics - specifically, the Conceptual Integration Theory (Fauconnier; Turner, 2002) and the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff; Johnson, 1980). Thus, we demonstrate that Cognitive Linguistics can contribute to the understanding of which cognitive processes are activated during the interpretation of poetic texts. This demonstration also considers the poet’s expressive intentions, as well as our own understanding as human, thinking, and creative beings.
