The central objective of this article was to analyze how the teaching of Geography can contribute to the development of citizenship in students in the final years of elementary school. To achieve this goal, we sought to reflect on the concept of citizenship and its link to education, based on current theories and normative documents; understand the importance of Geography teaching in the construction of citizenship and problematize the concept of citizenship in Geography teaching, from an empirical research with students from three 9th grade classes in a full-time public school in the municipality of Alto do Rodrigues-RN. During the empirical research, we developed an educational workshop with the students to work on the concept of citizenship. In this way, the students were led to reflect on this concept and how they could contribute more actively in solving problems encountered in their territories. The results of the research lead us to consider the importance of the teaching of Geography for the problematization of the theme in question, as well as the need to strengthen, not only in theory, but also in daily practice, the exercise of citizenship.
