With metadiscourse, it is possible to position ourselves textually/discursively in relation to the content of our text, generate engagement from linguistic elements that integrate paragraphs and even entire texts. In the context of ENEM, these resources can be powerful allies for candidates who present ENEM essay with marks of authorship and productive arguments in defense of a point of view. In this sense, the aim of this work is to investigate whether ENEM candidates use metadiscursive resources in their texts and what impact(s) they have on achieving the intended communicative purpose of the genre. To develop this scientific investigation, we resorted to the contributions of Bazerman (2006, 2015), Miller (2012) and Swales (1990) on the socio-rhetorical approach to genres, as well as Hyland's (2005) considerations on metadiscourse. This is a qualitative and exploratory research, with a corpus of 10 essays with a score of 1000 written by ENEM 2023 candidates and which are available for public consultation, from which we will investigate the use and relevance of metadiscursive resources used by them in their texts. The results reveal the need for more systematic work with authorship marks and productive use of arguments, to the detriment of training candidates with ENEM essay production forms.
